Chaotic Sandro Serves Pasta That'll Make You Weep: Alan Richman

How many places has he been? Tracking Sandro Fioriti -- chef, icon, deity, eccentric -- requires the instincts of a Kremlinologist. ``He fights with owners and he's gone,'' said one such person. ``He's Mary Poppins.''

In New York alone, his spokeswoman says, he's worked at 12 restaurants minimum. She adds, ``I'm guessing more.'' He's so revered that almost half the places where he's cooked have been named for him. The first Sandro's, the second Sandro's, Serafina Sandro and Sandro's in St. Martin. (So that's where he went when he disappeared from New York.)

Now there's a new Sandro's, a 50-seat restaurant on the Upper East Side.

He has publicly declared his intention of staying put. Do we believe him? There are promises and there is history.

Couple need help with plastic debt

Dear Amy: My wife and I are deep in credit card debt. She is in sales and makes much more money than I do (for which she is resentful). Her employer reimburses her business expenses, but she rarely does the required paperwork.

Last year alone, this left us responsible for almost $10,000 in charges. She had a company credit card but mishandled it and the account was closed. This is not the first time she has had credit card problems. More than half of our debt is because of this; the rest is necessary costs such as car repairs. We are reasonably frugal otherwise.

I have spent our savings and raided our kids' college funds to keep us afloat.

When I bring it up or offer to help, the discussion always ends in a fight or a promise to do better, yet nothing changes.

Bad credit history 'doesn't have to mean bad mortgage deal'

Having a bad credit rating does not necessarily mean customers can only obtain a poor mortgage deal, a leading lender has claimed.According to L&C, 71 per cent of people who have come to the company with a bad credit rating have been able to secure a mainstream mortgage deal with a competitive interest rate. Many people believe that a recent history of bad debt or County Court Judgements (CCJs) would prevent them getting competitive mortgage deals. However, L&C revealed that the situation is less clear than that, and that some lenders are more lenient that others."All too often, people assume that because they've had some credit problems in the past, they will have to pay a much higher interest rate and in some cases, high broker fees," explained James Cotton, a mortgage specialist at L&C."In fact, our research shows that by getting whole of market advice from L&C, borrowers can seek out the best deal for their circumstances and can often secure a better rate than they thought possible."A recent study from the Mortgage Trust found that record numbers of people were opting for fixed-rate mortgages. As interest rates have risen, the percentage of people choosing these sorts of mortgage has increased from 48 per cent to over 60 per cent.

'Piggybackers' Repair Credit, Worry Lenders

Only a low credit score stood between Alipio Estruch and a mortgage to buy a $449,000 Spanish-style house in Weston, a few miles west of Fort Lauderdale.

Instead of spending several years repairing his credit rating, the 37-year-old real estate agent paid $1,800 to an Internet-based company to bump up his score almost overnight.

The result was a happy ending for Estruch, but the growing practice is sending shivers through the mortgage industry. Federal regulators also are reviewing the practice.

Fair Isaac Corp., the developer of the widely used FICO score, said it will change its credit scoring system beginning this year in a way it contends will end this little-known but potentially high-impact mortgage loan loophole.

Instantcreditbuilders.com, or ICB, helped Estruch boost his score by arranging for him to be added as an authorized user on several credit cards of people with stellar credit who were paid to allow this coattailing.

Dream home of India's richest man

Details have emerged of a huge new building in Mumbai that is being built by India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani. His skyscraper home in the city will be over 170m tall and will have an army of 600 staff to manage it.

Its 27 floors on a 4,532 sq metre plot will provide a panoramic view of the entire city of Mumbai (Bombay) once it is completed next year. With the country's economy soaring, India's commercial city is poised to have many more such skyscrapers.
Construction of the family home is well under way.

'Full view'
The son of a former petrol pump attendant who went on to build a business empire, Mukesh Ambani is reportedly spending $1bn on his new home. Legend has it that Mr Ambani - the chairman, and largest shareholder of Reliance Industries, India's largest private sector company - wants to enjoy a "full view" of the Arabian Sea.

The Bridge Game

Since much of this food contains large amounts of illegal contaminants who is the winner in this part of the Bridge game? Is the toxic food acceptable collateral damage for luring China away from Russia and toward Oceania or simply to impoverish, sicken and weaken Americans? How about that Clinton proposal to grant China a port and free trade zone in Southern California? Was that to draw them toward our bloc or to expose it to Communist influence and lowered wage and health standards? The Bush II version of this plan was to turn over inspections at six of Americas ports to a conglomerate based in Dubai and Britain. It sounds like fanning the flames of pan-Islamic nationalism.* If our leaders are playing to win, at whose expense is the game?

From 1920-48 the British perverted their League of Nations Mandate to establish a National Home for the Jewish people in Palestine (Jordan and Israel), ultimately defining Jewish immigration and settlement, which they were required to facilitate, as illegal while encouraging limitless Arab immigration as well as frequent attacks on the Jews.

It's just not fare: It's way too hard to get a permit for a new ...

For your information, this cuts down on all the hair in the house, and in the summer keeps the cat feeling a lot cooler. I have a Maine coon cat that has a load of hair and frequent hairballs because she is way too hairy, and this cuts that down to almost nothing. My cat loves the way she looks because she prances around the house showing herself off after she is clipped.

I can't verbally state what I wish to happen to people with barbarically loud sound systems in their car, traipsing through town thinking, "Hey, I look and sound real good, man!" The person who created such a social anomaly should spend a life in regret and turmoil as did Alfred Nobel after creating explosive dynamite subsequently used for making bombs.

The Flip Side

Kudos to the entire crew at the Ocoee Publix on Silver Star Road.
