Harper under fire over environment and African aid
BERLIN -- Canada came under fire from two directions Monday in the lead-up to this week's G8 summit as Germany's leader criticized the Conservative government's climate-change policy as too weak, and aid activist Bob Geldof said Ottawa is blocking consensus on increasing assistance to Africa. In his first visit as prime minister to the German capital, Prime Minister Harper held up his government's climate-change plan as a model for the world. But he only earned a rebuke from German Chancellor Angela Merkel for abandoning Canada's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. "Of course, we are not happy at this point that Canada has abandoned Kyoto's goals," Merkel said in an television interview. She did, however, say she is encouraged that Germany and Canada agree on the need to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions "significantly" in the long term.
Insurers Win at US Supreme Court on Credit Law (Update4)
June 4 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Supreme Court limited the rights of consumers under a federal credit-reporting law in a victory for insurers Safeco Corp. and Geico Corp. and other financial services companies. The justices today said the Fair Credit Reporting Act doesn't require insurers to notify every consumer who is offered something short of the lowest premiums when seeking a rate quote or applying for a policy. ``Notices as common as these would take on the character of formalities, and formalities tend to be ignored,'' Justice David Souter wrote for seven of the court's nine justices. The court also unanimously limited the applicability of a provision that permits damage awards even when consumers don't suffer any injury. Although the justices didn't go as far as the insurance industry had sought, they said Safeco wasn't subject to the provision because it didn't recklessly violate the law.

I am sorry, earth. As I scar you, I scar myself: AQ & A with ...
This spring a small-but-innovative dance company in Southern California called TRIP Dance Theatre premiered a production about what poet Gary Snyder calls "the war against nature." The dance was called "Poisoning the Well." Using delicate, Asian-flavored music, played live, the dancers first appeared carrying water and gathering around a well. Slowly the audience could watch the grace and beauty of these dancers, four of them women, literally turned upside down by human desperation, greed, and the raw flow of our "effluent society," including elegantly simplified depictions of "red tides," the vast gyres of plastics in the oceans, and "drunken" trees. The dance was both gorgeous and upsetting, but required very few words words. To better understand, and to introduce TRIP Dance Theatre to a wider audience, I asked company founder and choreographer Monica Favand Campagna to talk about her work: .
Offshore broker business
Habit pervades every profession. But when it is both easy to break and lucrative to do so, surely it is time for a change? This is currently the case with the many mortgage advisers who do not deal in offshore mortgages for property in the UK. Often brokers are put off because they believe that the loans are complex to arrange or the type of business is simply beyond their areas of expertise. But in short, they are missing a trick. NatWest International, based in the Isle of Man, currently receives around 60% of its mortgage business through mortgage brokers – most of whom are from large London firms familiar with high net worth clients. But there is no reason for this to be the case. It has experience in offshore loans that is enough to carry the less experienced broker too.
